Prioritizing Mental Health as a Manager: A Checklist for Supporting Black Women in the Workplace

As a people manager, it's important to prioritize the mental health of all employees, but especially Black women who may face unique challenges in the workplace. By supporting their mental health, you can help create a positive and inclusive work environment that benefits everyone. Here are some questions you can ask yourself to check on how you're supporting Black women's mental health in the workplace:

How do I check in with my employees?

It's important to regularly check in with your employees to ensure they feel supported and heard. Do you have an open-door policy? Are you scheduling regular one-on-one meetings to discuss their concerns and well-being?

Am I actively addressing any microaggressions that occur?

Microaggressions, such as microassaults, microinvalidations, and microinsults, can create a hostile work environment for Black women. Are you actively addressing and preventing these types of behaviors from occurring? Do you have a plan in place to support employees who may experience these types of incidents?

How am I promoting work-life balance?

Promoting work-life balance can help prevent burnout and improve overall mental health. Are you encouraging your employees to take breaks and prioritize self-care? Are you offering flexible schedules or remote work options to support their personal needs?

Remember, as a people manager, you have the power to create a supportive and inclusive workplace for all employees. By prioritizing the mental health of Black women, you can help them feel valued and supported in their professional roles.
